Japan Braces for Scorching 40°C Summer: Retailers Launch Early Campaigns Amid Soaring Energy Costs

As the nation registers its third-earliest “extremely hot day” on record, retail giants morph into air-conditioned “cooling spots” to help cash-strapped consumers beat the heat.

TOKYO — Retailers across Japan have aggressively accelerated their summer sales campaigns as the nation braces for an extended period of extreme heat, with temperatures projected to hit a grueling 40°C or higher. The early push comes as citizens look for ways to escape soaring domestic electricity bills, driven by rising fuel costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The urgency follows an unprecedented move by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in April to officially introduce the term kokushobi (severely hot day) into its forecasting vocabulary to classify days where the mercury touches or surpasses 40°C. The decision was prompted by Japan recording its hottest summer on record last year.

The heatwave has already made an early arrival. Vast areas of Japan saw temperatures top 35°C (moshobi) on Monday—marking the third-earliest occurrence of an “extremely hot day” in the country’s recorded history. The mercury peaked at 35.3°C in both Hita (Oita Prefecture) and Toyooka (Hyogo Prefecture). The JMA has issued warnings that the intense heat will persist, urging the public to take strict precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Cooling Goods and Early Tech Demand Surge

With consumer awareness regarding heat safety at an all-time high, lifestyle and electronics retailers are moving quickly to capitalize on early demand.

General goods retailer Hands Inc. has already established dedicated seasonal zones featuring parasols and advanced cooling products across its outlets. According to company officials, compact handheld fans engineered for high airflow are experiencing a massive surge in sales.

Simultaneously, major electronics chain Bic Camera Inc. is reporting strong consumer interest in air conditioners. Industry experts note that now is a strategic window for purchasing home cooling systems. Japan is set to tighten its energy-saving compliance regulations for air conditioners in April 2027, a shift that is expected to drive up the manufacturing costs and retail prices of newer models. Bic Camera is currently urging households to secure purchases and schedule installation services before the mid-summer peak bottleneck.

Retail Giants Offer “Safe Havens” to Combat Inflation

Beyond selling merchandise, major corporations are reshaping their corporate spaces to serve as community sanctuaries. Retail conglomerate Aeon Co. has designated approximately 5,000 of its group stores nationwide as official “cooling spots.” These fully air-conditioned commercial spaces are being marketed as free refuges where citizens can escape the heat without accumulating high electricity bills at home.

To make the spaces more family-friendly, Aeon Mall Co. is expanding its indoor children’s play areas, offering a safer alternative to sun-exposed public parks.

Furthermore, acknowledging the financial pressure inflation is placing on global and domestic households, Aeon has committed to freezing prices on roughly 3,500 private-brand food products through the end of August.

“We want to support our customers through our pricing, responding to the small daily sacrifices they have to make,” stated Mitsuko Tsuchiya, President of Chiba-based Aeon Topvalu Co.
